Diwali is one of the major festival of Hindus that last for 5 days. The festival start from 15th day of the month Karthik. It is the darkest Night Of The Year called Kartik Amavasya (or no moon day). It falls in late of October and November every year. This year Diwali 2025 is celebrated on 20 October 2025. It is called festival of light the name is derived from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, meaning ‘row of light’. The festival symbolises the victory of light over darkness.

It is the biggest festival of India recognised as the festival of happiness and prosperity. Also celebrated in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Singapore, fiji, the United Kingdom USA and more. The festival is celebrated the return of Lord Rama along with Sita Maa and Laxman after defeating the demon King Ravana. The 5-day festival start with Dhanteras,on which people by jewellery or utensils. Followed by the Narak Chaturdashi (Choti Diwal). It marks the death of the demon king ‘Narakasura’.
Third day of this festival is Dipawali, For this auspicious day people starts the preparation one week before and clean their homes. On the main day, people worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth and prosperity). People lit earthen Diya and light lamps and placed them in a row along the parapets of homes, temples. In Bengal, Goddess Kali is worshipped, in North India the festival is celebrated to honour the Homecoming of Lord Rama with Sita to the city of Ayodhya after defeating Ram. In South India, the festival is celebrated Krishna’s defeating the demon Narakasura.
It is the festival of joy, prosperity and wealth. People celebrate Diwali by decorating their homes and floors inside and out with beautiful rangoli with coloured rice, sand and flower Petals, and children burst fire crackers. In the evening, families gather for Lakshmi puja, worship the Goddess of Lakshmi for blessings. After the evening Diwali Puja, people distribute sweets and enjoy delicious feast like Gujiya, with family and friends. The doors and Windows of the houses are kept open. People believe the Goddess Lakshmi will enter to their house and bless the residence with wealth, prosperity and success.

Dhanteras (Day 1 on 18 October 2025) – Diwali starts with the festival known as Dhanteras. On this day people by gold, silver or new utensils. It is considered to be auspicious to purchase these things on this day. In Dhanteras people worship Lord Dhanvantari the God Health and Ayurveda.
Narka Chaturdashi/ Choti Diwali (Day 2 on 19 October 2025) – It marks the second day of the festival. In North India, Narak Chaturdashi is also known as Choti Diwali. It is believed to that on these day Lord Krishna killed the demon Narkasura. People clean their homes, take oil bath and light a diya in the evening.
Diwali/Lakshmi puja (Day 3 on 20 October 2025) – It is the main day of the festival. This is a very auspicious day. Devotees perform Lakshmi pooja in the evening and offer prayers to the Goddess Lakshmi for wealth, peace and prosperity. For this day people clean and decorate their houses with Diyas, rangoli, flowers and fairy Lights. People wear new clothes, distribute sweets like laddu, Barfi with friends, neighbours and relatives, exchanging gift and greetings. Fireworks and crackers are also a major part of this celebration. It is believed to drive away Evil spirits.
