The word Dhanteras comes from the Sanskrit word, ‘Dhan’ means wealth and ‘Teras’ means 13th day. According to Hindu mythology on the day of Dhanteras, Goddess Lakshmi Lord Dhanvantri came out of the ocean during the churning of the milky sea, who is the god of wealth. Lord Dhanvantari is the god of medicine and Ayurveda. Since Lord Dhanvantari appeared on the 13th day of the Kartika month, people celebrated Dhanteras to worship him and pray for good health and wealth. It is believed that worshipping Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and health and Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, on this day brings prosperity, good health and longevity.
People also celebrate YumDeepam. On this day, people make a four-sided Diya with dough and then light this Diya by adding mustard oil and keep it outside the house.
