The main ritual and tradition of Gudi Padwa is hosting the Gudi outside the house or on the rooftops with symbolise the victory, success, and good luck.

The word ‘Gudi’ refers to Dhwaj (flag) and Padwa means the first day of bright phase of the Moon. People made Gudi using a bamboo pole and decorated it with a bright Silk cloth, Neem and mango leaves, flowers and a copper or silver pot which is placed upside down at the top of the bamboo. The Gudi is hoisted on the importance of the home, outside home or near a window. It represent the removal of negative and welcoming new opportunities.

The preparation of Gudi padwa begin with the cleaning and decorating of homes. People decorate their homes with rangoli, toran made with mango leaves and flowers. In the morning, people wake up early, take a holy bath, wear traditional clothes and perform special prayers and rituals for good health, happiness and success in the coming year.

On this auspicious day people prepare a special mixture with Neem leaves, jaggery, raw mango, and tamarind and eat it on this day.
