Earth Day History
It started in 1970 in the United States by Gaylord Nelson (a senator and environmentalist) and Dennis Hayes (a graduate student at Harvard University) to inspire people to protect and care for the environment.
At that time, pollution was widely spread like a large oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, US. They had concerned about the environmental damage, so they created a national day to focus public attention on the environment.
On 22 April 1970, about 20 million American people participated in the release and the activities to promote environmental protection. The idea was so successful that it became a global event and led to the creation of major laws for the environment, like Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the formation of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Today, Earth day is celebrated in over 200 countries. Now the world is involved in this environmental action for the common goal of protecting Earth.
