Significance of Krishna Janmashtami

In India the primary deity of worship in Janmashtami is the Infant form of Lord Krishna, known as Bal gopal and Laddu Gopal. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was born in Mathura (present-day Uttar Pradesh, India) to Devki and Vasudeva in a prison cell on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of Bhadrapada. King Kansa was a cruel tyrant who had imprisoned Devki and Vasudev after hearing a prophecy that Devki’s eighth son would Kansa. To prevent the prophecy from happening comes attempted to kill Devki’s children immediately after their birth.

During the birth of Lord Krishna (the eighth child of Devki), the whole place was put in deep sleep by magic. Vasudev carried the child to Gokul and left him with Nanda and Yashoda despite the heavy rain and locked prison Gate. The Yamuna river parted, and the serpent Sheshnag protected Krishna during the journey.

Rituals Performed During Krishna Janmashtami

The festival Krishna Janmashtami is the festival of joy. From all age groups of people, including children, women, men, and older all love Krishnashtami.

Every year on Krishna Janmashtami the devotees of Kanha or Lord Krishna fast all day. During Janmashtami, devotees and Lord Krishna name entire day and conclude there fast come at midnight on the time of Krishna’s birth.

For Krishna’s birth they buy a swing (Jhula) beautiful cloth for Kanha ji or Laddu Gopal Ji. They decorate the temple with flowers and balloon and other decorative materials.

In Mathura, Vrindavan and other part of North India, elaborate skits retailing Krishna’s life story and his different leelas are performed. Small children dressed as Lord Krishna and his Gopi to perform Raslila.
