Significance of Navratri

Navratri means nine nights. It is a highly significant Hindu festival celebrated in honour of Goddess Durga and her nine divine forms known as NavaDurga. Each nine days during Navratri is dedicated to a different form of Goddess Durga, the divine feminine power. The festival celebrates the Killing of the demon Mahishasur by Goddess Durga after a long Battle of 9 days that lasts on Vijayadashmi, after which Goddess Durga is named as Mahishasurmadini. During these nine days, devotees observe fasts, offer prayers and participate in rituals to see blessings from the Goddess. It is believed that worshipping the 9 forms of Durga during Navratri brings health, wealth, wisdom and strength.

The 10th day of Navratri is celebrated at Vijayadashmi or Dussehra. On this day, Lord Rama killed Ravana after a long battle and freed Sita from Lanka.
