Pongal 2026 Celebration

Pongal is a 4-day festival celebrated every year on 14 January. It is a way to thanking nature, the Sun god, cattle and farmland. It brings families, neighbours and community together in joy and celebration. The first day is celebrated as Bhogi Pongal, after Bhogi Pongal second day is celebrated as Surya Pongal or Thai Pongal, and it is the main festival. The 3rd day is celebrated as Mattu Pongal. The last bay of Pongal is called Kaanum Pongal.

1. Bhogi Pongal

Bhogi Pongal is the first day of Pongal dedicated to Lord Indra, the God of rain. On this day, people pray to Lord Indra to bless the land with rain for a good harvest. The first day of Pongal marks the end of winter and the beginning of the harvest season. On this occasion, people clean their homes, decorate with Kolam (rangoli), fresh flowers and mango leaves and discard all the old stuff, symbolising a fresh start and removing negativity.

On Bhogi Pongal, there is a tradition practised called the bonfire tradition. In the early morning, families light a bonfire using old things like unused household items. This ritual symbolises letting go of old things, bad habits and starting for new beginning. Around the bonfire, families and neighbours gather and sing folk songs and celebrate together. 2. Surya Pongal/ Thai Pongal

Thai Pongal is the second day of Pongal 2026. It is the main festival dedicated to Lord Surya (the Sun god). It is a day to thank the sun for giving energy, light and health to growing crops. On this auspicious day, people take early bath and where new traditional clothes. Decorate their houses with beautiful rangoli (Kolam) made with rice flour at the entrance of their home.

The main thing of this day is cooking the traditional dish called Pongal made with newly harvested rice, milk and jaggery, which is prepared in a new clay pot and offering to the Sun god and praying for good health, happiness and good harvest. Thai Pongal is celebrated on 15 January 2026.

3. Mattu Pongal

Mattu Pongal is the third day of Pongal 2026. On this day people honour cattle (cows and buffaloes) as they play an important role in farming. The cattle are bath on this day and decorated with flowers and bells, and worship.

4. Kaanum Pongal

Kanum Pongal is the fourth and last day of Pongal 2026 celebrations. This day is dedicated to social gatherings and family bonding. People visit relatives houses, exchange gifts and prepare delicious feasts.
