Why 26 January is Celebrated as Republic Day
India became independent from British rule on 15 August 1947, but the country was still following the law of the British government of the India Act 1935. At that time, India did not have its own constitution. So India formed a constituent assembly to draft the constitution of the country, chaired by Dr B.R Ambedkar, also known as the father of the Indian Constitution. The constituent assembly includes great leaders and visionaries like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad and many others.
This assembly took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to draft the constitution of India. On 26 January 1950, the constitution of India was officially adopted and India became Republic. Which means the country would now be ruled by elected representatives and not by any foreign power or monarchy.
